Unfortunately, extreme, anti-immigrant groups, who have blocked reform for years, are intent on shutting real solutions down. President Obama has a plan to make college more affordable for millions of Americans. The plan would save almost ten billion dollars a year by shutting down a program that gives banks wasteful subsidies on student loans, and devote the savings to Pell Grants to help students pay for college. FEMA has been forced to reverse its policy and has halted plans to evict Katrina survivors from FEMA trailers – the only home that many currently have. It will instead let those who are living in these trailers remain and purchase them for as little as $5. Of course, this is only a first step.
